Ma Muoi: A Beacon of Hope Powered by the Sun
When you meet Ma Muoi, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of her incredible journey. A survivor of the Vietnam War, Ma Muoi carries not just the physical and emotional scars of the conflict but also an unwavering spirit of compassion. Her husband, returned home with severe injuries, and together they sought to rebuild a life from the ashes of war. But their path took an extraordinary turn when Ma Muoi began searching for her friends—only to discover they had tragically passed, leaving behind children orphaned and disabled.
Faced with this heartbreaking reality, Ma Muoi made a choice that would forever change the lives of countless children. She took in seven of these orphaned kids, alongside her own two biological children, creating a family bound not by blood but by love and resilience. From this act of kindness, the Thien Duyen Shelter was born—a place where hope shines brighter than hardship.
Over the years, Ma Muoi’s care and determination have touched the lives of more than 100 children. She sold her own house to fund the shelter and continues to work tirelessly to ensure that every child has a safe home, a full plate, and an education. Whether they are severely disabled or able-bodied, every child at the shelter has a role to play, helping one another as part of a unique and nurturing community.
For Ma Muoi, education is the key to breaking cycles of poverty and providing these children with the chance to live meaningful, independent lives. Primary school children ride a special tuk-tuk to and from school, while older students rely on their own transport. With the savings from a solar energy system, the shelter dreams of providing scooters to help these older students continue their studies and thrive.
